Song Of Life |
Liner
notes:
so much music, so little time (60 minutes). since our entire collection is on
the computer, i had a lot to play with. the flip side is all the music i never
re-aquired after i ditched my vinyl or simply never owned in the first place.
i was very specifically looking for music that geeks might not have heard (that
is, the non-audiophiles. i figure the audiophiles have heard most everything and
give up). so negativeland and soul coughing got thumbs down on that criteria,
even though i love them. and i was looking for things that are odd or esoteric.
things i *like* was the second level of sorting; i like tons of stuff but i get
bored easily. many of these songs went through periods of continual listening at
some point in my life, however, and qualify as old favorites. the last level of
sort was when arranging the music i looked for nice segues from song to song and
then had to make that last agonizing choice.. (63 minutes).
Wooden Boat is the only slack key guitar album i own, but i love it. i love the
ethereal melodies and charming island songs in Keola Beamer's
deep, warm voice.
Red Hot + Blue is a collection of songs by Cole Porter and has been a favorite
album since i acquired it. most every song on the album is a delight, though the
interpretations vary as widely as the artists. i love it when the Fine Young
Cannibals did retro-type music, such as the several tracks they did for the film
Tin Men, and again here.
The Beautiful South have been a favorite since Jennifer Sylva and i played them
on her radio show at KZSC. "i love you, but you're boring" is the
track that struck our fancy. their style has evolved to an ever cleaner, pop
sound but the lyrics are as vicious as ever.
i'm a sucker for the Pixies. i don't know why, and i don't even like all of
their music. but, then, at the time i was listening to this album i was also
listening to Fuzzbox. "Here comes your man" is more tuneful than my
other favorite, "there goes my gun".
I was a big Cure fan in high school, but all my vinyl albums, EPs and consequent
B sides are long gone since my depression loving days are over. I heard this
track on the radio once and it made me laugh, so i picked up the album, the
Elektra anniversary collection. this is another strange selection of covers by
new artists, some great, some just odd.
Smash Mouth is a very recent addition to our music collection, after tons of
geeks said, "they're great!" and they are. This song off the new album
had me bopping all summer.
Hanky Panky is just more evidence of my love for odd cover albums. this entire
album by well loved The The are covers of country hit writer Hank Williams. it
was a close call, but "There's a Tear in my Beer" didn't make the cut.
Lyle Lovett is played so often at our house he is practically on auto-play. The
Fat Girl is an early piece that exemplifies his concise, ironic country style.
Harlem Nocture as played by the Lounge Lizards (not to be confused with the
Austin Lounge Lizards) was the theme music to "Mickey Spilane's Mike
Hammer", a tv series when i was in high school. i liked the rendition so
much i went out and bought the album. it remains about the only song i do like
on the album, but it is an interesting view of early John Lurie (theme music for
Get Shorty among other newer projects).
i love the Cowboy Junkies. Towne's Blues is obviously a tribute since it is much
more bluesy than their usual country style, but the song is a good example of
their lyricism.
The Police were my first love and i like every song they ever recorded. my
all-time favorite is "Walking in your Footsteps", but i don't
currently have a copy. "On any other day" is a fun song that got lots
of play during my freshman christmas holiday as i drove to work and it is full
of peculiar sunny memories for me.
"Her first mistake" is classic Lyle Lovett and requires a good listen
to catch the whole story.
The Replacements were introduced to me in high school by Christy Coke and while
it wasn't and isn't complete love, they are a big part of my young life.
"Skyway" shows the lovely guitar work and lyrics that are
characteristic of Paul
