Make It Funky

I chose an all instrumental format to limit my choices in selection. I have a bad memory for band/album/song names so I knew mostly what songs I wanted to choose from but not where in my collection to find them.

1) This has been my favorite version of this song since I first heard it. It has so much more energy, and what better way to kick things off?

2) I love genre-crossing music. Jazz with bagpipes? Moo! I first heard Rare Air on a UCSC shuttle heading towards the base of campus. I didn't know the name but I went to a music store and asked for jazz with bagpipes and this is what they gave me.

3) Sort of a spanish jazz. I dig the trumpets (of course) and the electric piano sound.

4) Straight-ahead latin jazz now. I discovered this group when Heidi was working at Cymbaline on 41st and I was wandering the store. More keyboard and trumpets!

5) Three hotshot guitar players having fun and guitar generated mooing. What's not to like?

6) Balinese gamelan. I love this stuff and hope to someday visit to see it there and in person. Some of the unison stuff from the last song reminds me of this music.

7) Uakti I first heard at a Cowell College Night. It was the first and only act I ever saw there where no one left to go do homework and then receive and standing ovation at the end. They make all their own instruments.

8) Good rainy day music if you listen to the whole album. This much just gets you to a cafe.

9) Romanian gypsy music. Mild-mannered folk-song by start, crazed dance song while you wait.

10) The last song leads to klezmer. I was already going to put this song on, but now when I hear it I think about smic's lame VP-level boss. You weren't here at 9. Why weren't you here at 9?

11) From New Orleans klezmer to New Orleans brass band. I love this band and live they're even better! How does Tuba Phil play all song every song for hours?

12) Which brings us to some funk. All instrumental funk isn't so easy to find, but Bootsy came through for me.

13) Time to rest.
