Subject: let us each exhume

Those Best Of lists are fun. But I've little interest in discovering again th at Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was pretty bitchen'.

I'm more interested in individual tracks.

I'm even more interested in individual tracks that I haven't ever heard before !

? So how about this: Choose 60 minutes of music or at least 10 tracks that you Quite Like. You must be able to encode each track to high-quality .mp3 (you are geek: you can do it) Say either 128kbps fixed or (preferably) High Quality VBR encoding as a minimum (lower quality ok if can't get a particular track anywhere save some obscure download).

The qualifier for choosing or excluding a track (a track that you Quite Like) is this: Each track should be a find, a burial, a b-side, something that Billboard missed, something that was NOT a hit single, something buried at slot 4 on side 2 that really digs into you. Don't choose a track just to be "reactive" or "bleeding edge" or "contrariwise". Just stuff you dig, that you reckon maybe others should oughta hear, and stuff that *just maybe* we others haven't hear d before.

Category restriction? No way.

Examples of your editorial process:
----------------------------------
Madonna's "Like A Virgin":  no.
Madonna's "Oh Father": maybe! Your call.
Beethoven's 5th, first movement:  no.
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No3, 3rd: ok!
Getz/Gilberto, "Girl From Ipanema" no.
Joao Gilberto, "Hola": ok!
The Clash, "Rock The Casbah"  no.
Big Audio Dynamite II, "E=MC^2"  well, now that's interesting. it *was* a hit, but wasn't blockbuster in the US. Your call.
Stevie Wonder, "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" ouch. If not for _High Fidelity_ I'd give it a resounding OK! As it is, I'd say Your Call.
Stevie Wonder, "He's Misstra Know It All"  OK!
Mischievous Monks, "Choo Bet"  OK!
Tao Chemical, "Too Polite"  OK!
Shaman Mutterings: Vol 6, "mnubehm"  ok ok ok
Simon & Garfunkel, "Mrs. Robinson"  no.
Simon & Garfunkel, "April, Come She Will"  ok!
David Bowie, "Scary Monsters" naw.
David Bowie, "Up The Hill Backwards" ok!
XTC, "Dear God" no
XTC, "Earn Enough For Us" ok
The Dave Matthews Band, "Satellite" My thinking would be "no" because although I dig the track, I also believe I have heard this in a "popular, radioplay, videoplay" situation once or twice or more.
The Dave Matthews Band, "Two Step" My thinking would be "sure!" because 1) I dig it, and 2) to my knowledge, it hasn't met the ^ above criteria for outright nixing.
Sheryl Crow, "Leaving Las Vegas" no
Sheryl Crow, "Weather Channel" gods, yes!

Hopefully you get the picture. Those are my thought processes, and they will differ from yours . You must be your own editor, and follow your heart. (snif, cry)

When you have at most 60minutes or at least 10 tracks encoded and uploaded somewhere, you post here and/or also let me know (smith@grok.com).

If I get at least 10 of you who have done this, I'll burn the whole mess onto one or more CDroms and mail each of you who participated a copy . This is probably illegal. If you're like me however, you might just discover something worth spending coin on that otherwise wouldn't have nudged your radar.

Take your time, but hurry. =D

Also, if you can, ensure that each track has a proper .id3 tag filled out with artist name, album, and trackname.
I'd like each of your tracks to be named "login##", where "login" is replaced by your nick, and ## is replaced by the number of the track in your list.

Thus my entries will be named pogo01.mp3, pogo02.mp3, etc. The ID3 tags will contain the rest of the info.
I won't edit your lists. You must make those decisions. Your choices will be sealed and delivered, will he, nil he.  I *might* encourage one or more people to choose a replacement track in the case that there are duplicate choices made across lists.

? ya wanna?

Windows PC? Free Encoder (musicmatch) and meager instructions here.
